Software engineer Resume Template
A software engineer resume must do two things simultaneously: pass automated applicant tracking systems that scan for technical keywords, and impress senior engineers who look for evidence of shipped, impactful work. This template is structured to achieve both — clean one-column layout, dedicated technical skills block, and achievement-driven bullet guidance.
Editable Word template and matching example
A draft you can actually use
Single-column layout, replaceable fields, a separate fictional example and guidance for limited experience.

Explain code you actually wrote, how you tested it and the limits of the system, whether your experience is employment or a personal project.
Open the Word file in Word, LibreOffice or import it into Google Docs. Replace every bracketed field, remove unused sections, and check page breaks before exporting the employer’s requested file type. The template contains no fictional work history.

Profile
Software development diploma graduate seeking a junior software engineer role. Built a volunteer shift planner with TypeScript and React, with tested scheduling rules and documented accessibility limitations.
Technical skills
TypeScript and React: forms and state management. Vitest: scheduling-rule tests. Git: feature branches and code review in a classroom team. HTML and CSS.
Selected engineering work
Volunteer shift planner | Independent project | February to June 2026
Built an editable shift form and conflict messages in React. Kept scheduling rules in a separate TypeScript module so they could be tested without rendering the interface.
Added tests for overlapping shifts and empty names; corrected a boundary case where adjacent shifts were incorrectly rejected.
Stored sample shifts in browser memory. The demo has no authentication or shared database and is not used to manage a real organization.
Additional experience
Peer project reviewer | Example College course | January to May 2026
Reviewed a classmate's form-validation change, reproduced an error with a small fixture and explained the proposed fix in a pull-request comment.
Education
Diploma in Software Development | Example College | June 2026
Explain behavior before listing frameworks
The shift planner has a clear user task and an identifiable contribution. The separate scheduling module explains a design decision; saying only React developer would not show this.
Use a testable failure case
Adjacent versus overlapping shifts gives an interviewer a concrete debugging discussion. A passing test is not evidence of production reliability, so do not translate this into an uptime or customer-impact claim.
Separate a demo from a deployed service
The example states that data is held in memory and no authentication exists. If your project is deployed, explain the actual environment and responsibilities; do not imply it serves real users unless it does.
Limited experience or no measurable achievements?
- No engineering job yet? Lead with a completed personal, coursework or volunteer project and label its setting. Keep any paid job under its real title.
- No usage or performance numbers? Describe an implemented behavior, a reproducible bug fix, a test or a design trade-off. Do not invent user counts or latency improvements.
- No public repository? Describe the work without confidential code, or create a separate authorized sample. Never publish employer code, credentials or user records to prove experience.
Before you submit
- Identify the code or feature you personally implemented.
- Explain a tested edge case and one remaining limitation.
- Separate coursework and demos from production responsibilities.
- Check portfolio access and remove credentials, proprietary code and personal data.
- Keep only skills you can demonstrate and follow the vacancy's file instructions.
