Career change Resume Template
Changing careers means your most relevant experience may not be your most recent experience. A career change resume needs a different structure — one that leads with transferable skills and highlights the achievements most relevant to your new target role, regardless of where they were earned.

Targeted profile
Retail shift supervisor moving into project coordination. Brings staff scheduling, task tracking and handoff experience from store operations, supported by a completed project-planning course and a labelled practice schedule.
Transferable evidence
Scheduling: prepared weekly staff rotas and recorded coverage changes for the store manager's approval.
Task coordination: maintained a stocktake preparation list with owners and outstanding questions for the next shift.
Employment history
Retail Shift Supervisor | Example Retail Company | May 2022 to August 2026
Coordinated stocktake preparation across shifts and raised missing assignments with the store manager. Budget and staffing approval remained with the manager.
Wrote handover notes covering unfinished tasks and delivery changes so the following supervisor could prioritize the shift.
Relevant learning and practice
Introduction to Project Planning | Example Learning Centre | July 2026
Created a practice office-move schedule with task dependencies and a risk log. This was a course exercise, not a delivered workplace project.
Education and tools
Diploma in Business | Example College | 2022. Excel for rotas and task tracking; shared documents for handover notes.
Choose one destination role
The profile targets project coordination rather than describing a generic desire for change. For another target, replace the evidence with work relevant to that vacancy; a retail-to-project example is not universal.
Keep the chronology visible
The real title Retail Shift Supervisor and employment dates stay in the work history. Transferable evidence explains relevance without falsely presenting the applicant as an experienced project manager.
Separate learning from delivery
The office-move schedule is explicitly a course exercise. Completed training can support a transition, but it is not evidence that the applicant delivered a project for an employer.
Limited experience or no measurable achievements?
- No new qualification? Use a genuine work example that matches the new role, and identify requirements you still need to meet. Do not imply equivalence to a required license or credential.
- Returning after a gap? Keep employment dates accurate. A brief career-break entry is optional; you do not need to disclose sensitive personal circumstances to explain transferable skills.
- No measured business outcomes? Describe a schedule, checklist, handoff or decision you supported. Avoid claiming project budgets, delivery ownership or cost savings you cannot substantiate.
Before you submit
- Name one target role and choose evidence relevant to its vacancy.
- Preserve actual job titles, employers and employment dates.
- Keep training and simulated projects separate from employment delivery.
- Distinguish transferable skills from mandatory qualifications you do not hold.
- Remove unsupported impact claims and check the final file against submission instructions.
